Lea is currently focusing on a series charcoal drawings that share the quiet magic of the mountain bushland surrounding her studio space situated on Yuin Nation. Hidden tracks, dark tunnels, gently glowing mysteries - spores? Breath? Fireflies? - tempt the viewer into somewhere intricate and unknown, intriguing and beautiful, possibly dangerous. Created with willow and studio fireplace charcoal on mostly Hahnemühle or Magnani papers, sizes varying from 54x54cm to 1.9metres.
The series came about upon completion of a two year explorative experiment aimed at creating a non photographic body of work, and brings Hawkins back to her first love, drawing.
The second piece from the series was selected as a finalist in the Blackstone Gallery works on Paper Prize in 2021.
