I have quite a passion for photographing sculptures and 3d art. It's immensely satisfying when I finish up a shot and I have something that is true to the peice as well as a great photograph. Sculptures lend themselves to some interesting exercises in lighting, they also never complain that they look too fat.

In order of appearance here:

December 2011 saw the completion of 'Written' , a series of 9 portraits of local writers. Each writer was asked to provide a photograph of herself together with some written words. These two items where put together in an editing program and projected onto a blank wall. the writers were then photographed standing in front of their projection. No restrictions were placed on photo choice or what was written with the intention that these choices, as well as the handwriting itself, gave added levels to the portraits, further insights into the person and their personality.

With The spine collection about done, work has begun on the new series HAIR (working title).  I work mostly with model Poppy, who has amazing naturally ringletted red hair that we haven't, up till now, taken full advantage of. ..and now we are going nuts with it.

A combined official launch of this web page , a new facebook page and a virtual exhibition of the Spine series is pegged for the first week of November 2011.  You will have to provide your own cheap wine and cheese, but you can attend from the comfort of your own home, wear your pyjamas and no one will know.  Your little avatar will be able to walk around a virtual gallery, partake of virtual wine and cheese (still cheap though), and listen to music by some of the musicians I have worked with, hear a poem by Chris Mansell, and hang about chatting and virtual dancing to a virtual world DJ.  It's a bit of a lark, but should be interesting and slightly amusing.

A page on this site is currently under construction.  It will provide more information on what this is all about and how to get there.

You can keep posted via the new Facebook Page for Lea Hawkins Photography.

Currently doing film stills for Beyond Empathy Film Project
http://www.beyondempathy.org.au/projects/illawarra-film-project

It's a full length feature film, with the aim to improve the wellbeing, health and social participation of Beyond Empathy participants (young people who live with constant or recurring hardship) in the Illawarra. The project will work with up to 100 young participants over two years.

It is great fun working with this wonderful bunch of people. Working on a film set involves a fair bit of sitting around, a talent I seem to be quite the natural at.

I was commissioned by the Road and Traffic Authority of New South wales, to photograph the night works on the hundred plus year old Hampden Bridge in Kangaroo Valley.

Possibly my most favourite job yet, and not just because I got to wear a hard hat.

July 2010- some lovely words from Kevin Kastning on Lea's album work in an interview by

For the full interview and countless others go to www.kevinkastning.com

MWE3: The artwork on all four albums is very impressive. What kind of effect were you going for regarding the artwork and packaging on the CD releases?

Kevin: Thanks, Robert. I didn’t do any of the artwork or album design on any of them. I will usually start by sharing my thoughts with Sandor as to the kind of album cover I’m “hearing,” based on the pieces for the album, and we’ll discuss what we’re both hearing. We are always in agreement on this.
The last three albums were done by a great artist in Australia named Lea Hawkins. Lea has been listening to my music for many years, and I think she will sometimes know what the cover should be before I do. I send her a copy of the final mix of the album, and a description of what I’m going for in terms of a cover; a feeling, something conveyed; things hinted at, a thematic overview, an essence; all based on and connected to the compositions. Sometimes I will provide a vague verbal compositional overview. She always creates something which truly reflects the compositions on the albums, while at the same time enhancing the impact of them, I think, by her art and design and how it all is connected to, and is even an extension of, the music. Using Returning as an example, I think the cover art is a palpable crystallization of the music. The pieces have that sense of depth, that texture, and then there is the fading into blackness which seems to hover like a mist with this album. There is also a photo in the gatefold inside the album cover which is connected. I am proud to have Lea’s paintings and photography as our cover art.  - exerpt from www.MWE3.com

October 2009 -  A nice review for the artwork on sora's Album 'Heartwood', Chawech from Heathen harvest.  For the full review go to www.soramusic.ca

Last year I had the honour and luck to receive Sora`s EP Light. I was captivated by the four songs on that EP. As I said at that time, it was a prelude for the upcoming album. And here it is. Heartwood. Eleven tracks strong, including the four from the Light EP. The packaging is somewhat the same; a cardboard slipcase with a CD, a booklet and a postcard. However, the booklet from Heartwood is way more extended than the one from Light. It features all lyrics, something that always scores points with me. But besides that, the whole package looks excellent. The atmosphere the frontcover paves is continued on the back, the inside and in the booklet. It`s a feeling of warmth, connectivity with nature and traditions. It`s almost melancholic. And it fits the music.

July 2009 - kind words from Laura Kelsey at 100  Mile Free Press on the artwork for Sora's Heartwood Album.

www.soramusic.com for full review, to hear some tracks and much more.

From the first, Sora makes a good impression. Her media package for her 2009 independent release Heartwood includes a personalized postcard (that was addressed to me, by name, making me feel special); a colour-printed blurb card; and an amazingly professional and impressive cardboard, folded album with thick colour booklet and, of course, CD. The colour scheme of the package reflects Sora`s music: earthy and organic.
